Exploring the Meaning of Wellness

Sometimes all we need is a change in our perspective…

winding road through trees

Too often we consider Wellness as the successful end-goal of a heath objective, such as, dieting to lose weight. This perspective hides the purest beauty of Wellness and does nothing to inspire us.

For surely Wellness is not just an achievement of some vague state of disease-free health.  It is not the “house” at the end of the road where you settle for where you are.  True Inspired Wellness shifts that perspective of a settling just for the goal, to a state of adventurous being, of living an exalted life, expressed fully, in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual realms.

Wellness is “Well-being”, not, “well I’m done”.

3 Benefits of Keeping Summer in Your Life

“The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration” ~ Claude Monet
“The poetry of the earth is never dead.” ~ John Keats

Great artists knew it. Great poets understood it.

Connecting with nature is good for us!

During the summer we often spend more time than usual outside in nature and in countless outdoor activities. As summer winds down we accelerate back into the more hectic lifestyle of school starting and holidays on the horizon. During this increased stress it is even more vital to our wellness to keep a bit of summer in our daily lives by getting outside regularly. Here are just three of the benefits of doing that.:

  1. Natural sunlight is a rich source of Vitamin D for our body. We continue to learn how good Vitamin D is for our health and how critical it is for our body’s systems and how it strengthens our immune system.
  2. Being outdoors gives us a break from the technology we have allowed to not just run our lives, but to run over our lives. In the process our spirit, energy, and often our health is flattened like a dried-up leftover tortilla. Even short term activities outside: a walk, gardening, watering plants, playing with kids, walking the dog, sitting or talking outside with real-life friends rather than online Facebook posts, have the powerful effect of clearing, refocusing, and inspiring our minds.
  3. We soon discover that restlessness and increased anxiety of our stressed out life dissolve in a bath of natural sunlight. Once that happens we have more room for inspiration and for that magnificent attribute of peace to move into our being.

Make a plan. The days will be getting shorter as we move from summer to autumn and into winter. Consider how you can keep even just a small piece of summer in your life, then enjoy it.

Old Resolution vs NEW YOU SOLUTION

journey of 1000 milesJanuary 1st – the day gym memberships increase and restaurants see a temporary dip in their profits as so many of us make resolutions to put ourselves on a self-improvement plan which most of the time includes weight loss.

At the beginning of the new year, just about everyone I know has a new enthusiasm and determination to get back on track and get their weight off. So they make a New Year’s Resolution to do just that. The challenge for most of us when it comes to those resolutions is that all too often we quickly lose our focus. When we first make that resolution there is a brief focused interaction with our present reality. We admit we have a problem, we are fat! We know that we want to change for the better. Quicker than we can say, “pleasantly plump” our focus shifts to only looking ahead to where we want to go – that leaner body and that peak of optimal health.  We lose sight that our present reality is where we must begin the process of change. It is the choices we make today – not those yet to come someday. If we fail to make a wise choice today based on the truth of our reality we will face disappointment and the frustration of feeling like we blew it…again. The problem is we didn’t blow it – we just never left the starting gate. It is difficult to ever cross the finish line if we never truly begin.

If your New Year’s Resolution went nowhere and now it is almost March, take this very moment in time to refocus on your most inner spirit’s desire rather than your taste buds or stomach’s tyrannical reign over your life. Take a deep breath and verbalize what you truly want for your life…is it really that half-dozen donuts with chocolate frosting? Or is it to be able to walk briskly without gasping for air? Or to be able to play with your children or grandchildren without every joint aching from the excess weight? Or is it to be able to pull on and fasten your pants without having to lie down to do it? Or is it to not have to take so many medications for the diseases that have accompanied our wrong choices? Or is it best of all to one day wake up and say “wow, I feel stronger and more alive today”?

Dr Anderson“You can spend a little time NOW getting healthy, or spend ALL of your time later being sick.” ~ Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen

Regardless of whether you’re just getting started, somewhere in the middle of your journey, or dealing with the challenges of maintaining a healthy weight, the challenge for all of us is the same: to stay focused on what we want and continue to choose wisely.

Forget what’s happened in the past – you can’t change it. The past can only ruin and rule in your present and determine your future if you allow it to. Today, at two months into 2013, you can set your course for a different future – if you know what you want and have made the decision to go for it. Once you’ve done that and focused on what you want, all that’s left to do is make the choices today that will support your decision. Decide, focus, then choose wisely…

Bringing Health Awareness to the Community

Our Community Wellness Day for Pasadena Texas is quickly approaching –  October 6, 2012 from 11:00 to 2:00! We have been hard at work to bring this event for the first time to the Pasadena and surrounding area and are very excited to see the event taking shape. (For further details please open the Community Wellness page tab at the top of this blog.)

The Mayor of Pasadena, Mayor Johnny Isbell, has issued a proclamation that October 6, 2012 is Community Wellness Day in the city of Pasadena. On Sunday, September 30, 2012, the local newspaper The Pasadena Citizen honored our event by putting us on the front page, spotlighting the importance of increasing health awareness in our community.

So be sure to come check us out at the Pasadena Memorial High School this coming Saturday, October 6 from 11 AM to 2 PM! We look forward to seeing you there!

Deferred Maintenance – A Choice Made by Waiting

English: Dilapidated_house_in_Paramaribo.Deferred maintenance is what neglect is called in real estate circles. It happens when we neglect a property by simply putting off taking care of it. Deferred maintenance is the passive choice that was made when we ignored taking any action. Failure to complete minor repairs as needed results in a more rapid deterioration of the property. Before long, the minor repairs have become costly renovations that can quickly overwhelm our personal savings account.

From the time we’re born until the day we die, our physical body is the housing we spend our entire life within. With a house, as with our bodies, it is easy (especially when we are young) to ignore those minor repairs of daily wear & tear. It is also easy to unconsciously fill up the empty spaces with poor decorating choices or hoard useless items that become clutter rather than useable life-enhancing decor.

We often make the same 3 comparable mistakes with our bodies as we do our houses.

1. We ignore the daily wear and tear on our bodies

2. We make poor choices in our lifestyle and foods as we seek quick satisfaction.

3. We become hoarders of our over-cluttered emotional life in the form of too many cheeseburgers & fries.

I cannot tell you how many times in conversations I hear a person say, ” I don’t need a chiropractor, my back is fine except when I bend wrong,” or, “I don’t need to diet because my blood tests are fine ever since I’ve been on the pills the doctor gave me,” or the most often heard and one I am personally familiar with, “It is not my fault, my family has bad genes – everyone has heart disease or cancer.”

I totally get it. We do not want to face the fact that we have made a choice, by our own deferred maintenance and inaction, which has caused us pain. The following quote is one of those truths though that should help us push the pause button and just consider how we may have contributed at least a little to our current state of health. Best of all though, it reminds us how we can now take control. It has to do with the choices we make.

“Genes load the gun. Lifestyle pulls the trigger.” ~ Roslyn Rogers

A house that has suffered from deferred maintenance sells for much less, because the cost to repair is so great. Making proactive choices regarding your physical health right now can save you a lot of future expense – financially & emotionally. Seize the day today, because it can change the world for you in the future. Chiropractic care is not just about your back! Be preemptive! We are here to help you where you are at now, so you can be the best you can be at where you want to be!

Count the Cost

Often when people ask about the cost of a new health program it is because they focus on the expense not the benefits. We don’t consider that what we are really paying for is our opportunity to finally reach a state of optimal health.

The best question for us to ask would be, “how much are our poor health habits costing us”? Take a moment to think about it. What medications would we not have to take? What junk food would we not be enticed to buy? What larger sized clothing would we not have to buy? What seatbelt extension would we not have to buy? What extra plane ticket for our excess weight would we not be forced to purchase? What extra doctor appointments and parking fees would we not have to pay for because our joints have worn out? Often we choose the least path of resistance simply because we think it is easier to stay comfortable in our status quo. We settle for less.

So what value do you place on your health? I counted the cost. The cost of declining health was too high. I did not want my body to be a foreclosed estate, devalued and in disrepair. I did not want to settle for less. I wanted the best for myself. I wanted the upgrade to optimal health. Now I want that best for others. This is more than about the food you eat. This is about the rest of your life being the best it can be. How about you, do you want an upgrade in your health? Count the cost and choose the best for yourself. Let’s get healthy together.

What Resolution?

New Year’s Day is associated with fireworks, black-eyed peas, football and resolution making. Every year that comes in many of us make at least one resolution – usually about some way we think we should do something that will improve us, such as quit smoking, spend more time with family, or lose weight. And with every year that goes out many of us forget we have ever made that resolution. Why is it that most of us never stick with our resolutions? We viewed the resolution to be a single event in our life that would make the change we expect rather than a change that that would manifest itself across all events of our life. For example, making a huge effort to attend a playoff game your child is in does not really contribute to the overall improvement of relationship of parent & child. Whereas making consistent small changes such as taking a little extra time each day to listen, talk, laugh, & love with that child creates lifetime changes.

The same is true when we make a resolution to lose weight. We resolve that on Jan 1, after the family dinner of course, we will make a huge effort to go on a diet. Then we notice Jan 2 is our child’s birthday, so we can’t start then. And then Jan 3 comes and we have a business lunch so we can’t start then. Before long our weight loss resolution lies in the dust of powdered sugar doughnut residue. How did we let this happen so quickly? We viewed the resolution as a one-time event like that one playoff game. True optimal health through weight loss will never be a one-time event. It must involve those consistent small changes that cut through all aspects of your life and change forever the relationship of your mind and body with food.

The dictionary definition of resolution is: “A settled purpose, a determination, a firm decision to do or not to do something.”

If you desire better health for a lifetime then let your resolution be a settled purpose to begin now, don’t worry about last week, or fret about next week. There is no better time to start than now.
