Old Resolution vs NEW YOU SOLUTION

journey of 1000 milesJanuary 1st – the day gym memberships increase and restaurants see a temporary dip in their profits as so many of us make resolutions to put ourselves on a self-improvement plan which most of the time includes weight loss.

At the beginning of the new year, just about everyone I know has a new enthusiasm and determination to get back on track and get their weight off. So they make a New Year’s Resolution to do just that. The challenge for most of us when it comes to those resolutions is that all too often we quickly lose our focus. When we first make that resolution there is a brief focused interaction with our present reality. We admit we have a problem, we are fat! We know that we want to change for the better. Quicker than we can say, “pleasantly plump” our focus shifts to only looking ahead to where we want to go – that leaner body and that peak of optimal health.  We lose sight that our present reality is where we must begin the process of change. It is the choices we make today – not those yet to come someday. If we fail to make a wise choice today based on the truth of our reality we will face disappointment and the frustration of feeling like we blew it…again. The problem is we didn’t blow it – we just never left the starting gate. It is difficult to ever cross the finish line if we never truly begin.

If your New Year’s Resolution went nowhere and now it is almost March, take this very moment in time to refocus on your most inner spirit’s desire rather than your taste buds or stomach’s tyrannical reign over your life. Take a deep breath and verbalize what you truly want for your life…is it really that half-dozen donuts with chocolate frosting? Or is it to be able to walk briskly without gasping for air? Or to be able to play with your children or grandchildren without every joint aching from the excess weight? Or is it to be able to pull on and fasten your pants without having to lie down to do it? Or is it to not have to take so many medications for the diseases that have accompanied our wrong choices? Or is it best of all to one day wake up and say “wow, I feel stronger and more alive today”?

Dr Anderson“You can spend a little time NOW getting healthy, or spend ALL of your time later being sick.” ~ Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen

Regardless of whether you’re just getting started, somewhere in the middle of your journey, or dealing with the challenges of maintaining a healthy weight, the challenge for all of us is the same: to stay focused on what we want and continue to choose wisely.

Forget what’s happened in the past – you can’t change it. The past can only ruin and rule in your present and determine your future if you allow it to. Today, at two months into 2013, you can set your course for a different future – if you know what you want and have made the decision to go for it. Once you’ve done that and focused on what you want, all that’s left to do is make the choices today that will support your decision. Decide, focus, then choose wisely…

Deferred Maintenance – A Choice Made by Waiting

English: Dilapidated_house_in_Paramaribo.Deferred maintenance is what neglect is called in real estate circles. It happens when we neglect a property by simply putting off taking care of it. Deferred maintenance is the passive choice that was made when we ignored taking any action. Failure to complete minor repairs as needed results in a more rapid deterioration of the property. Before long, the minor repairs have become costly renovations that can quickly overwhelm our personal savings account.

From the time we’re born until the day we die, our physical body is the housing we spend our entire life within. With a house, as with our bodies, it is easy (especially when we are young) to ignore those minor repairs of daily wear & tear. It is also easy to unconsciously fill up the empty spaces with poor decorating choices or hoard useless items that become clutter rather than useable life-enhancing decor.

We often make the same 3 comparable mistakes with our bodies as we do our houses.

1. We ignore the daily wear and tear on our bodies

2. We make poor choices in our lifestyle and foods as we seek quick satisfaction.

3. We become hoarders of our over-cluttered emotional life in the form of too many cheeseburgers & fries.

I cannot tell you how many times in conversations I hear a person say, ” I don’t need a chiropractor, my back is fine except when I bend wrong,” or, “I don’t need to diet because my blood tests are fine ever since I’ve been on the pills the doctor gave me,” or the most often heard and one I am personally familiar with, “It is not my fault, my family has bad genes – everyone has heart disease or cancer.”

I totally get it. We do not want to face the fact that we have made a choice, by our own deferred maintenance and inaction, which has caused us pain. The following quote is one of those truths though that should help us push the pause button and just consider how we may have contributed at least a little to our current state of health. Best of all though, it reminds us how we can now take control. It has to do with the choices we make.

“Genes load the gun. Lifestyle pulls the trigger.” ~ Roslyn Rogers

A house that has suffered from deferred maintenance sells for much less, because the cost to repair is so great. Making proactive choices regarding your physical health right now can save you a lot of future expense – financially & emotionally. Seize the day today, because it can change the world for you in the future. Chiropractic care is not just about your back! Be preemptive! We are here to help you where you are at now, so you can be the best you can be at where you want to be!
