Exploring the Meaning of Wellness

Sometimes all we need is a change in our perspective…

winding road through trees

Too often we consider Wellness as the successful end-goal of a heath objective, such as, dieting to lose weight. This perspective hides the purest beauty of Wellness and does nothing to inspire us.

For surely Wellness is not just an achievement of some vague state of disease-free health.  It is not the “house” at the end of the road where you settle for where you are.  True Inspired Wellness shifts that perspective of a settling just for the goal, to a state of adventurous being, of living an exalted life, expressed fully, in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual realms.

Wellness is “Well-being”, not, “well I’m done”.

3 Benefits of Keeping Summer in Your Life

countryMilridge-1

“The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration” ~ Claude Monet
“The poetry of the earth is never dead.” ~ John Keats

Great artists knew it. Great poets understood it.

Connecting with nature is good for us!

During the summer we often spend more time than usual outside in nature and in countless outdoor activities. As summer winds down we accelerate back into the more hectic lifestyle of school starting and holidays on the horizon. During this increased stress it is even more vital to our wellness to keep a bit of summer in our daily lives by getting outside regularly. Here are just three of the benefits of doing that.:

  1. Natural sunlight is a rich source of Vitamin D for our body. We continue to learn how good Vitamin D is for our health and how critical it is for our body’s systems and how it strengthens our immune system.
  2. Being outdoors gives us a break from the technology we have allowed to not just run our lives, but to run over our lives. In the process our spirit, energy, and often our health is flattened like a dried-up leftover tortilla. Even short term activities outside: a walk, gardening, watering plants, playing with kids, walking the dog, sitting or talking outside with real-life friends rather than online Facebook posts, have the powerful effect of clearing, refocusing, and inspiring our minds.
  3. We soon discover that restlessness and increased anxiety of our stressed out life dissolve in a bath of natural sunlight. Once that happens we have more room for inspiration and for that magnificent attribute of peace to move into our being.

Make a plan. The days will be getting shorter as we move from summer to autumn and into winter. Consider how you can keep even just a small piece of summer in your life, then enjoy it.

Got Stress?

These days, stress is so common it’s often seen as “normal.” Since it’s unlikely that we can eliminate stress in our lives, improving our ability to withstand and accommodate it is important for our health.

There’s good stress and bad stress.

Positive Stress Negative Stress
A workout at the gym Lack of adequate sleep
One-day water fast Daily diet of fast food
Learning the piano Paying the bills
International travel Airline seats
Trying new foods Food poisoning
A glass of wine Three glasses of wine

Generally, stress falls into three categories:

Physical Stress – Repetitive motions (painting the ceiling), postural distortions (falling asleep with your neck twisted) and whiplash injuries from a car accident are physical stresses. So are slips and falls. Even a difficult birth or learning to walk.

Emotional Stress – Ever face an impossible deadline at work? Or grieved the loss of a loved one? Notice the posture of someone who is depressed. Emotional stress is one of the most common, yet overlooked types of negative stress.  Anger, or a sense of hopelessness, are common forms of emotional stress that may affect the spine.

Chemical Stress – Today’s environment constantly assaults us with chemicals. Drugs, preservatives, tobacco, alcohol, pollen, pet dander, detergents, fabric softeners and a host of other substances that can affect our nervous system and muscle tone.

Stress produces a reaction in your body. Besides increased levels of stress hormones, the fight or flight response may produce spinal joint dysfunction. Think of it as your body’s circuit breaker.

Understanding Chiropractic

“What is Chiropractic?

nervous system

Our spinal cord is made up of nerves connecting the brain to nerves in the body — a superhighway for messages between our brain and the rest of our body. Our spinal cord is surrounded for most of its length by the bones (vertebrae) that form the spine.

Here are some basic underlying principles to deepen your understanding of Chiropractic.

Pain In Your Neck?

“Behold the turtle, he makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.”
~ James Bryant Conant

Most people experience neck pain at some time in their lives. A  Chiropractor’s training  helps them to be adept at locating and removing the subluxation cause of neck pain. This allows the innate ability of your body to heal itself and results in progressively restoring better mobility in the neck and other affected body parts. Like the turtle in the quote above, if you are a sufferer of neck pain, you may only make progress to relief and optimal health by sticking out your neck – at your Chiropractor’s office.

The cervical (neck) spine starts at the base of the brain stem. It includes the first seven bones of the spinal column, and runs to right above the shoulder blades. The cervical spine also contains muscles, ligaments and joints, with nerve endings that respond to problems in your body by conveying the sensation of pain to the brain, which in turn responds with “Yikes, my neck sure hurts!”

Often neck pain results from performing repetitive movements, such as painting ceilings, working at a computer with head in a strained position, or even sleeping wrong. All may result in strain, sprain, inflammation or spasm in the ligaments, muscles, or joints in the neck. This video below conveys the complex and beautiful design of those structures of the neck that must all work together.

If your neck is giving you pain and not working as designed, consider the turtle again. We all want to make progress towards the best health we can possibly be. Hiding closed up in a shell hoping the pain will one day go away, gets you nowhere. Take charge of your health and give us a call! It would be our pleasure to help you discover wellness care through Chiropractic.

Old Resolution vs NEW YOU SOLUTION

journey of 1000 milesJanuary 1st – the day gym memberships increase and restaurants see a temporary dip in their profits as so many of us make resolutions to put ourselves on a self-improvement plan which most of the time includes weight loss.

At the beginning of the new year, just about everyone I know has a new enthusiasm and determination to get back on track and get their weight off. So they make a New Year’s Resolution to do just that. The challenge for most of us when it comes to those resolutions is that all too often we quickly lose our focus. When we first make that resolution there is a brief focused interaction with our present reality. We admit we have a problem, we are fat! We know that we want to change for the better. Quicker than we can say, “pleasantly plump” our focus shifts to only looking ahead to where we want to go – that leaner body and that peak of optimal health.  We lose sight that our present reality is where we must begin the process of change. It is the choices we make today – not those yet to come someday. If we fail to make a wise choice today based on the truth of our reality we will face disappointment and the frustration of feeling like we blew it…again. The problem is we didn’t blow it – we just never left the starting gate. It is difficult to ever cross the finish line if we never truly begin.

If your New Year’s Resolution went nowhere and now it is almost March, take this very moment in time to refocus on your most inner spirit’s desire rather than your taste buds or stomach’s tyrannical reign over your life. Take a deep breath and verbalize what you truly want for your life…is it really that half-dozen donuts with chocolate frosting? Or is it to be able to walk briskly without gasping for air? Or to be able to play with your children or grandchildren without every joint aching from the excess weight? Or is it to be able to pull on and fasten your pants without having to lie down to do it? Or is it to not have to take so many medications for the diseases that have accompanied our wrong choices? Or is it best of all to one day wake up and say “wow, I feel stronger and more alive today”?

Dr Anderson“You can spend a little time NOW getting healthy, or spend ALL of your time later being sick.” ~ Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen

Regardless of whether you’re just getting started, somewhere in the middle of your journey, or dealing with the challenges of maintaining a healthy weight, the challenge for all of us is the same: to stay focused on what we want and continue to choose wisely.

Forget what’s happened in the past – you can’t change it. The past can only ruin and rule in your present and determine your future if you allow it to. Today, at two months into 2013, you can set your course for a different future – if you know what you want and have made the decision to go for it. Once you’ve done that and focused on what you want, all that’s left to do is make the choices today that will support your decision. Decide, focus, then choose wisely…

Did You Know?

ability to healDid you know that this is what Chiropractic is about…enhancing your body’s ability to heal itself. Your chiropractor, no matter how wonderful they are, does not heal you, but they do equip you to heal yourself.  Detecting and correcting subluxations, spinal nerve interference, unhinders your body. You are set free to tap into this magnificent innate ability that our creator God endowed in each one of us. It is so much more than relief from an aching back or headaches. God designed you in His own boundless image — not the fettered & limited version we have in our head or by which we’ve been indoctrinated by others and the world. Wouldn’t you like to know what you may have been missing? Don’t just roll over and accept the limits of your circumstances or your thinking. Be free! Get your spine checked. A new way of life is eagerly awaiting your discovery.

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:14
